Description:

Artificial light at night has become one of the fastest-growing forms of pollution, affecting wildlife, disrupting ecosystems, obscuring our view of the stars, and even impacting human health. Yet many homeowners are unaware that a few simple changes to their outdoor lighting can make a significant difference.

The goal of this project is to educate and empower homeowners to become Dark Sky stewards by helping them understand the effects of light pollution and providing practical, affordable solutions to reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting.

Through educational articles, social media content, before-and-after examples, checklists, and community outreach, this project will demonstrate how simple improvements—such as installing fully shielded fixtures, using warmer color temperatures, adding timers or motion sensors, and directing light only where it's needed—can help protect wildlife while improving the beauty and safety of their homes.

My hope is that by making dark sky practices approachable and easy to implement, more communities will preserve the wonder of the night sky while creating healthier habitats for wildlife and future generations.
