Our Project Overview

Challenges address- Many highways in Wyoming intersect with wildlife migration routes. Animals like deer, elk, and antelope are often seen crossing roads, which then can lead to collisions that harm both animal and driver. This project will focus on raising awareness about these accidents and how roads impact wildlife movement.

Impact- This project will identify and map wildlife collision hotspots in Wyoming using the available data. It will also include outreach and education materials to help inform drivers about wildlife crossing and encourage safe driving in high risk areas.

Measured progress- Success will be measured by completing a map of collision hotspots and creating education materials to share with the community. Progress will be tracked the same way through engagement and feedback by the community.

Description:
Wildlife vehicle collisions are becoming more common in Wyoming. Animals such as elk, deer, and antelope are frequently crossing highways during their season migrations. This can lead to a dangerous collision with vehicles. These accidents can not only pose a threat to human safety but also result in a significant loss in wildlife and economic costs related to vehicle damage and roadway accidents. In certain areas where highway intersect its important wildlife corridors, these collisions can also disrupt migration patterns and have a negative effect on animal populations.

This project will focus heavily on raising awareness and identifying areas where wildlife vehicle collisions are most likely to occur. I will do this by reviewing  data that is publicly available such as local reports.
