My Eco-Mission
My name is Martha Blanco, I am a student at Leuzinger high school in Lawndale. I am a part of the Environmental Careers Academy and participate in an out of school dance class teaching girls ages 6 to 16. I work with them to teach not only about dance but responsibility and commitment. Along with this I learned I am good with teaching and am able to communicate well in ways they each understand. I also learned over time the best way to teach is going along with the kids you work with and adjusting as you go.
Through many experiences I have also learned to work with kids with autism and down syndrome. I would work along a friend of mine named Adain who had autism, I would help with keeping him in a environment he could handle without over stimulating him and help him understand processes he had to go through in school. I would also help with my friend Seth who has down sydrome. I learned to communicate with him in his own way and how to handle a situation when he would get frustrated with no one understanding him or him not understanding something.
With this being said my Eco-Mission is to bring more of an understanding of environmental green spaces and sustainability to special needs students in a hands-on activity workshops in order to give them a sense of understanding visually and being able to enjoy the activity of recycling and upcycling. I have always been involved with nature from recycling all my life to tending to mothers outdoor garden. I have always had an aware mind of how the environment and caring for it can help not only our planet but our economy and health. I became aware of the Environmental Careers Academy in the middle of freshman year and knowing this I entered my sophomore year. I continued to learn more about the environment which made me want to teach more to others. I believe with these environmental workshops it will teach special needs students about sustainability and green spaces and help have a better understanding about the environment and how are way we can help protect it.
