Why Every Light Matters

One of the ideas I’m working to share with children is that conservation starts with understanding how our everyday choices affect the natural world. This blog post and video about keeping beaches dark, clean, and flat helps children see how something as simple as turning off a light, filling in a hole, or taking belongings off the beach can help a tiny hatchling make it safely to the sea. I had the opportunity through my volunteer work with my local sea turtle conservation group to design a bulletin board for the Melbourne Beach Library. It was extremely well received, and it just made me feel so good to know that our community cares so much and is working to teach their children the importance of clean, flat, dark beaches!
When children understand why these actions matter, protection becomes personal.
