RecycleMania is a competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the U.S. and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. Did your campus participate? How did you do? What challenges did you face? What item(s) was the most recycled on campus?
Campus Conservation Nationals is the largest electricity and water reduction competition for colleges and universities in the world. This spring, more than 100 campuses competed in the dorms, and academic buildings across campus. Did your campus compete? If so, what did you do to participate? Turn off the lights, unplug your computers, study in the dark? Do your laundry with a friend?
If you aren't familiar with either of these competitions and want to learn more to compete for 2015 check out www.RecycleMania.org and www.CompeteToReduce.org.

LIU Post doubled its recycling rate from 10% to 20%. The hardest part for me has been calculating the weights for trash. Traditionally, we've performed waste audits and with a couple dozen dumpsters on campus, this becomes very, very time-consuming. The first waste audit I did though was also for my honors thesis, so it worked out perfectly.

Good job on increasing LIU's recycyling rate! Yes, calculating weights can be time consuming. Maybe for next year you can recruit more volunteers to help out or try and include it as part of a deliverable of a course.
