Phase II: DO

1. Did you accomplish the goals you set for this project? Please explain.
I believe we did accomplish our goal for this project. We were able to educate the community on black bears and trash maintenance. We were able to create a working management plan and have some of the product implemented into city decision making and code. As well as reduce human bear conflicts throughout the valley.

Policies implemented
We were able implement 3 of the policies outlined in the management plan into to city code.
3. When did you begin and complete your project?
I started this project August of 2019 and finished July 2021
4. What was challenging about your project and how did you respond?
Challenging parts of this project was dealing with many different stakeholders with varying opinions on the topic. Trying to get a like common fix to the problem that everyone would be happy with. It was also challenging trying to explain very detailed data to the non scientific community.
5. Which groups were involved in this project? Students, faculty, staff or community groups?
Students, Faculty, CPW Staff, Community groups (friends of the bears)
6. Was your project funded? If so, how?
We had some funding from the CPW but most was self funded with a few sponsors along the way.
6. How did you communicate about this project and educate the broader campus and/or community?
We held community seminars, created a website and mobile application, we talked about the projet at every chance we got.

Phase IV: LESSONS LEARNED

1. What was the biggest or best thing you learned from your project?
The challenges of working with multiple stakeholders with varying opinions on black bears and being able to successfully communicate with those individuals to reach a common goal!
2. What advice would you give to others working on a similar project?
Patience and tenacity are the key when working on a project that big and controversial.
3. Based on your response above, what are your future plans for this project? And are there resources (people, financial, etc.) available to sustain it?
The project will continued to be used in grant applications to increase the cities resources to reduce human back bear conflicts. Its the charge of city officials and the CPW to continue to implement the codes that were put into place.
