Hello everyone! I am Yan, a recent graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill,  Department of Environmental sciences and engineering. I am now volunteering in Clean Air Carolina at an advocate. I am very PASSIONATE about the consumptionism and its environmental impacts and planning an education and outreach project. Would like to share with you guys. Anyone interested in joining me? Or just want to hang out in this area and talk about the environment, or... puppies?  wink

I can’t recall how many times I saw people hauling clothes from fast fashion stores such as H&M, Forever 21. I also used to love buying full basket of clothes when I go to mall, because they are cheap and pretty. But not after 2 years, because of their poor quality, we throw them away or donate them. However, because of there are just too many of these clothes, local thrift stores only accept small part of the clothes; only 1% of the clothes can be recycled by textile recyclers. The problems caused by this overdress trends are relevant to all kinds of environmental and social issues. Behind the fast fashion chain, there are sweat shops, air and water pollution and climate change...that most people aren't aware of. sad

I start preparing the education and outreach campaign on educating people about the impacts of our shopping habits, and learn how to live a greener life, in ways of blogs, local speeches and clothes swap activities, or any ideas? I would love to hear your opinions.
I also want to
invite anyone interested to join this project and work together, most importantly, let’s have fun and make the changes we want to see! heartheartheartheart

Hello Yan!

I think a blog would be a great idea. Is part of your outreach campaign to direct people to second-hand or thrift stores? There are a few online that could be researched and written about so that instead of buying new clothes, they could reuse. What do you think?

Hi Laci!
Thanks for your ideas. Posting blogs is very good way to start :) There are many local thrift stores that I want to interview for, write about their sustainability stories.
It's also very important to direct people to go to thrift stores, clothes swap events instead of shopping at fast fashion stores. Many times, I have found that people don't know what services they, so I want to introduce these clothes-reuse resources.
Best,
Yan
