Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate is seeking a Sustainability Coordinator who will work on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus which maintains a robust waste reduction and recycling program that includes compost and recycling across the entire campus, a surplus furniture and office supply reuse and donation program, and a Zero Waste Events program. The Waste Reduction and Recycling Operations Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the operations that support these programs and services on the Homewood Campus in order to achieve JHU’s waste reduction and diversion commitments. This includes management of material handler employees, solid waste equipment and recycling work orders.

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

 

Coordinate solid waste and recycling operations throughout the campus. Hire, supervise, delegate tasks, and oversee appropriate disciplinary action for five or more bargaining unit members and student employees. Manage daily operations of the department including routine maintenance, work orders, emergency calls, and equipment. Monitors waste and recycling equipment and coordinates maintenance and service requests with internal departments and external vendors. Coordinate with appropriate departments to ensure vehicles are maintained, work orders are submitted, and vehicle paperwork is up to date and on file. Receive all recycling work orders via the Maximo work order system, communicate with campus clients, delegate tasks and close out work orders. Manage the Hop Reuse Hub, our surplus furniture reuse program, including overseeing and tracking the collection, inventory, distribution, donation and disposal of furniture and equipment, as well as, maintaining a safe workspace.Collaborate with colleagues to identify opportunities to improve existing programs and add new programs to continuously improve waste reduction and diversion, including the Office of Sustainability, Housing and Dining. Build a strong system of accountability for performance between the Custodial Supervisors, Custodians, and the Materials Handlers to achieve the highest level of quality and consistency across the campus. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Scope of Responsibility:

 

  • The scope of responsibility includes but is not limited to academic buildings on the Homewood Campus and may be asked to help outside of the academic community of buildings.

 

Decision Making:

 

  • Reports to the Waste Reduction and Recycling Manager but carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Understands the vision and priorities of the waste program to make decisions and establish work protocols for operations.

 

Authority:

 

  • Hires, directs, manages, and oversees appropriate disciplinary action for five or more FTE bargaining unit employees and student employees.
  • Supervisory responsibilities include staff who work on different shifts than this position and therefore may on occasion require visits to campus, phone communication, and/or supervisory support during those shifts. The hours for this position are M-F 7am-3:30pm. The other shifts are 3pm-11:30pm and 11pm-7:30am.

 

Communication:

 

  • Communicates clearly and regularly with Custodial team, campus clients and departmental partners.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a variety of audiences.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

 

  • Prefer a Bachelor's Degree or significant coursework in the sustainability or sustainable materials management field.
  • Extensive experience in solid waste and recycling and proven effective management may be substituted for formal education.
  • Two years of experience supervising employees, preference given to managing bargaining unit employees, and managing a solid waste and recycling program in a higher education setting.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

  • Must be computer literate.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups both inside and outside the department.
  • Must have a valid Maryland Driver’s License.
  • Ability to drive a stick shift preferred.

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:

 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
