Project Goal Summary

"Fair Trade is a global movement made up of a diverse network of producers, companies, shoppers, advocates, and organizations putting people and planet first." - Fair Trade Certified

North Seattle College is working towards becoming a Fair Trade Certified college campus. This was a year long initiative started by the Sustainability Board in North Seattle College's Student Leadership program. To learn more about our campaign and progress, click the link below!

The Fair Trade campaign at North Seattle College has included educational outreach, tabling events and integration into the classroom.
The Board has tabled at major college events, held a week-long Earth Fair in April, and connected with students in the community. Our coffee shop, the Grove, made the switch to Fair Trade coffee beans for all espresso as part of the Fair Trade Campaign. Currently, the Sustainability Board is developing a proposal for a Fair Trade Commitment on behalf of the college administration. Our goal for 2018 is to have the full support of college administration on North Seattle College's Fair Trade Commitment and to continue educating with and engaging with the diverse student population.

Project Goals and News
This year long campaign addressed the integration of Fair Trade and Sustainability with North Seattle College's campus. The project was designed to educate students on the concept of Fair Trade and why it is important. In addition, the project served to increase access to Fair Trade products at both the Bookstore and Grove Coffee Shop on campus. This project has been a campus wide effort that reaches across all faculty, staff and students. Future Sustainability Board members for Student Leadership will continue on with this project for years to come. We currently measure progress by number of education materials handed out, numbers of students engaged with during events, and number of samples handed out during events. In coming years, the Sustainability Board will be developing a campus wide survey to create a baseline and begin the process of data collection.

The North Seattle College Fair Trade campain is through the Sustainability Board in Student Leadership. It is funded by Student Leadership and Multicultural Programs, and through the North Seattle College Sustainability Fund. This project has involved the Sustainability Board comprised of four students, the President's Advisory Council for Sustainability, representing a wide range of departments and faculty from across the North Seattle College campus, and the student-run Ecologic Club.

We have had both successes and faced challenges throughout the duration of this project. Some of the successes include switching the Grove Coffe Shop espresso to Fair Trade Coffee Beans, engaging with over 500 students at campus events, offering a wider range of Fair Trade products on campus, and gaining the support of the President's Advisory Council for Sustainability for our Fair Trade Campaign. We have encountered challenges such as improper equipment for Fair Trade coffee bean griding at the Grove Coffee Shop, lack of fiscal and administrative support from the college executive team, and engaging in all Student Leadership collaboration for the campaign. To address these challenges, the Sustainability Board Manual is being revised, current Board Members will be doing a workshop with incoming Student Leaders about Fair Trade, and Leadership training will include a sustainability-focused component.
