Project Goal Summary
As a service-learning project, myself and a partner volunteered at Lettuce Lake Regional County Park to create the Florida Black Bear Trail. It is an interactive compass point trail that follows the story of a Florida black bear throughout a year. The educational trail was inspired by the Florida Wildlife Cooridor Expedition led by Tampa locals. For this project we created a series of YouTube videosξthat demonstrate information about the life a black bear through seasons migration. The information in the videos covers topics such as diet, habitat, and urban sprawl. It also features calls to action to participants to reach out to local governmental officials and donate. Participants use a compass app to direct themselves to each stop along the trail following cardinal directions given in the activity packet. At each stop, they can scan a QR code to watch videos about the bear that pertain to that stop. For example, during a stop near a gopher tortoise hole participants watch a video about habitats. One of the best benefits of this project is it can also be used as a virtual field trip classroom activity inside a classroom. The park ranger supervisor sent the packet and links to videos to interested teachers across the state to use in their classroom.ξ
